Jewelry Cleaning Tips

Between the cooking, decorating, errands and everyday life during a busy holiday season, dirt can quickly accumulate on your jewelry. You don’t want that beautiful family heirloom or gift to lose its beautiful sparkle, so we wanted to give you a few tips you can use at home to help your beautiful jewelry stay shimmering!

Gold Jewelry

A simple and easy way to clean your gold jewelry is by utilizing some mild dish soap. Use a small bowl, add some club soda or sodium-free seltzer water and dish soap then place your jewelry in to soak. Let the jewelry soak for approximately 5-10 minutes, then swish it around before removing. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to get into prong and crevice areas for a thorough cleaning. Now you can rinse your jewelry pieces under running water then dry them off using a soft cloth.

Silver Jewelry

Forego the polishing aspect and try this fun science method! Get a bowl/dish and line the bottom with aluminum foil. Bring a pot of water to rolling boil (note that there needs to be enough to fill the bowl) then add baking soda to hot water ( 1 tablespoon of baking soda per cup of water), then place silver jewelry in dish making sure it is touching the foil as this is essential for the chemical reaction! Pour the solution of hot water and baking soda into bowl/dish with jewelry, then let sit for 5-10 +/- minutes (depending on the amount of tarnish). Remove jewelry being careful of the hot water and allow to dry. Now be astonished at how clean your silver jewelry is! Curious how this works? The process reverses the chemical reaction that caused your silver jewelry to tarnish, how cool is that!

While these tips are great for a quick at home cleaning, you cannot substitute the results a professional cleaning from a jeweler will get you! If you are unsure of cleaning your own jewelry stop into our Harry K store and let us bring that glisten back to your dirty jewelry!
